In the UK, in 2006 alone, more than 615,000 men and women were diagnosed with an STI. Some of the facts…

Genital herpes (HSV) Genital herpes causes genital sores or blisters, and without constant anti-viral medication the symptoms can recur. HSV infection often cannot be detected which means that many people carry and transmit the virus without knowing it. Infection rates in the UK are highest among 20-24 year-old men and women. 1 in 6 teens and adults in the USA are infected. Since 1971 the number of diagnoses of HSV in the UK has increased 500% in men and 2200% in women.

Genital chlamydia The most common STI in the UK. If not treated, chlamydia can cause long-term pain and damage fertility, making women unable to become pregnant. Most people with chlamydia don’t show any symptoms, but they can still spread the infection. Infection rates in the UK are highest among 20-24 year-old men and 16-24 year-old women. Since 1997 the number of new diagnoses of chlamydia in the UK has risen 166%.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) The most common STI in the world, infecting more than 440 million people. HPV causes 99.7% of cervical cancer and this kills around 288,000 women every year. HPV can also cause genital skin cancer and genital warts. HPV can remain latent in the body and cause problems decades later. According to the British Journal of Obstretrics and Gynecology, 46% of teenage girls acquire HPV from their first sexual relationship. Transmission can occur by any genital contact and the virus can also be present on a person’s abdomen or thighs.
