Sexual Innocence - Leaflet

What is sexual innocence? Does it have any value? Is it a good and useful thing or an obstacle to getting what you want? Is it something you want to keep or lose as quickly as possible?

A useful starting point for understanding innocence is the word itself. Based on a couple of Latin words, it literally means “not harming” or “not destroying.” Someone who is innocent is someone who doesn’t do harm, doesn’t destroy. Someone who is judged innocent in a court – i.e. not guilty – is literally someone who has been found not to have done any harm. So someone who is sexually innocent is someone who in the way they live their sexuality doesn’t hurt themselves or others. They don’t destroy the beauty of sexuality or the intimacy and love which it makes possible.

Sexual innocence isn’t the same as sexual naivety. It doesn’t mean you don’t know about or understand sexuality and the erotic. It might mean this for a child of course (and that’s a healthy thing), but for a self-aware adult it means that you see how good sexual love and the erotic can be, and you know how to differentiate between what is positive and negative, helpful and unhelpful, and you live that realisation. In the way you think and behave, you refuse to do damage in the arena of sexuality, and you choose to do good, to affirm, to be creative, and to be someone who protects and enriches love and intimacy, for yourself and others.

Sexual innocence is a great and very attractive strength, and one that can reveal a lot of courage and character in certain cultural environments. It frees relationships from tension, suspicion and unnecessary complications, it enables greater intimacy, trust and certainty, and it’s essential for finding and living the kind of sexual love that deep down we all want most.
