Hi. We’ve not met, but I’m rich, famous and drop-dead handsome. I live in a big mansion in Switzerland and my (huge) garage is full of seriously expensive super-cars.

Ok, that’s not exactly true. Actually, none of it’s true. I’m lying. (I know, you’re so surprised...)

The difference between telling the truth and telling lies is so basic we just don’t think about it most of the time. At every level, we depend on truth – on communicating reality as it really is and as best we can. Friendship especially requires complete honesty.

It’s often said that body language is a primary means of communication. And just as I can tell the truth or lie with my words, so I can also tell the truth or lie with my body.

There’s one place in particular where body language plays a primary role: sexual intimacy. From the gentleness of holding hands to the passion of sexual intercourse, the body speaks. Sexual body language can communicate the most beautiful and precious truth: ‘I love you.’

But just as I can lie with my words, I can also lie with my sexual body language. I can speak the language of sexual love without really meaning it. I can say I love you with my body – a kiss for example – while really I’m here more for the pleasure or the emotional warmth than anything else. Certainly, love is about enjoyment and pleasure; at the same time it’s about real kindness and thoughtful responsibility. If it’s not, I’m just using you, and I’m lying with my body.

As everyone knows, lying is an effective way to destroy friendship. But when friendship is the key to beautiful, exciting and lasting sexual intimacy, using sexual body language for anything less than love isn’t going to get you what you really want most.
