Sexual intimacy, attraction, desire, fascination, affection, enjoyment, the erotic, fertility… It fills our books, magazines, art, fashion, music, movies and advertising. It holds a unique place in our imagination, thoughts and desire.

So it’s maybe surprising how little real thought we give to our desire for love and sexual intimacy. But thinking it through well is worth it, because unless I know clearly what I really want, I’m unlikely to be able to find it and make it happen.

Is all sexual intimacy about love? Certainly, it can be and should be. Whatever happens in the fictional arena of movies and novels, in the real world sexual intimacy is awesome inside real love and friendship and awful outside it. The excitement, responsibility, creativity, sensitivity and certainty of love allow sexuality to be lived with immense enjoyment and security. But if love and real friendship don’t animate sexual intimacy, the experience is radically different. Sexual intimacy is narrowed and suffocated by manipulation, uncertainty and hesitation, and I subject myself to psychological, emotional and maybe even physical harm.

There’s only one good reason to say "no" to something: because I am saying "yes" to something bigger and better – for myself and for others. I might say "no" to junk food, because I want to say "yes" to the benefits of eating well, or "no" to smoking because of a "yes" to health and fitness. Saying "yes" to love can mean saying "no" to sexual activity when it’s not what it should be and getting involved would mean hurting my chances of finding, creating and living the real thing.

So if I want sexual intimacy as good as it gets, I need to say "yes" to real love and friendship, and not hesitate to say "no" to anything that falls short of this.
