Everyone wants love. But what does “love” mean? We love lots of things. I love that latest track by my favourite band. I love travelling to exotic places. I love pizza with pepperoni. I love my girlfriend.

“Love” means something a bit different each time. Or at least it should. If I “love” pizza the same way I “love” my girlfriend (pizza’s just so beautiful, I care for pizza, me and pizza have such a great relationship), then I need help. And if I “love” my girlfriend the same way I “love” pizza (this pepperoni’s not hot enough - bring me a new pizza and throw this one out), then we both need help.

The way I love pizza is about use. I use pizza (a) because I’m hungry, and (b) because it tastes good. It gives me what I want – nutrition and pleasure – and when I’m finished with it I can dispose of it. The way love my girlfriend is about intimacy and responsibility. Faced with a person like me, who is valuable and precious simply because she is a person, I want to make sure that all my thoughts and actions protect and enhance this preciousness. When I say “I love you,” I also mean I promise never to do anything selfish that will hurt you and I will do everything I can to make your life beautiful and happy. It involves need and pleasure, but it’s about more than that.

Immersed in a consumer culture – and “consumer” literally means “someone who uses” – it’s easy for our patterns of thought and behaviour to get focussed on using. That’s fine for pizza, but when it comes to relationships between men and women, treating sexual attractiveness with a consumer attitude isn’t smart. I harm the one I love and myself, and I miss out on real love which is a whole lot better.

So when it comes to my thoughts and behaviour with the person I say I love, I need to ask what is sometimes a tough question: “Is this ‘pizza love’ or the real thing?"
