Plunging necklines, sexy mini-skirts, hot pants, lycra-loaded vests, semi-transparent ultra-tight jeans that dissolve in sunshine. Ok, we made that last one up. But you get the picture. When it comes to fashion for us girls, year in year out, it's mainly about...sex. Sex, sex and...err...more sex.

At the risk of being disrespectfully counter-cultural, here's what I think: trying to look as super-sexy as possible every hour of the day and night might seem appealing, but it ain’t the way to go.

Sure, we’re going to turn a few guys’ heads. But which guys? The guys who are going to treat us with respect, consideration, thoughtfulness, sensitivity - i.e. real love - as well as like us for our sexual attractiveness and sensual beauty, or the guys who are going to see us primarily as objects for sexual kicks (and use "consideration", "respect" etc. insofar as it gets them those kicks)? You know the story.

The truth is that drawing immediate attention to those areas of your body which are the focus in sexual intimacy is probably going to encourage guys who look at you to think about sex. Surprisingly. If you want a guy to look at you and see you as potentially his best and most intimate life-long friend with whom he enjoys sex (i.e. "wife"), then you need a better strategy. It’s not because these areas of the body are “bad”; it’s because they’re so good and so alluring. Drawing attention to them has its place - inside the certainty and intimacy of married love - but draw the attention too soon and you risk tempting guys to think of you in “sex first, friendship second (or never)” terms instead of the other way round. In other words, you risk setting yourself up to be used.

Deciding not to wear hot pants etc. doesn’t mean I have to walk around in a big sack; I can be attractive without being provocative. It’s about balance, and when I live the balance I show that I want real love. And I give it a real chance.
